In situations where depth is an issue, RC slab foundations offer an alternative

RC 'SLAB' FOUNDATIONS

RC 'slab' foundations (also known as ‘raft foundations’) spread load across a large flat area, allowing a structure to 'float'. Typically, it is ideal when the soil is highly compressible and other foundation solutions might not be suitable.

Using this method,  the existing ground is brought to the right level. When local councils or engineers request the installation of anti-heave, it is done accordingly. Around the perimeter of the foundation, wooden shutters are installed. Engineers then place and install reinforced steel according to their designs. The concrete is then filled to the correct level once it has been passed by the building control inspector or warranty inspector.

In many construction projects, RC slab foundations are ideal, especially where:

  • The land comprises of low density/pressure soil

  • The Walls/columns are close together

  • It is expected to be a low-load project (for example, 1-2 storey buildings)

  • Other piling methods are not suitable for soils with a lot of sediments and contaminants
